To-Do The Impossible

This Piece was inspired by the Japanese saying "Koi no taki-noboori." Which means "When the koi fish swims upstream." This saying is used when you do the impossible or something unbelievable. The waves represent power and luck and the koi fish represents courage. I used the two traditional wave pattern that is used in many Japanese brush art. I placed the waves circulating direction toward the koi fish to convey the part where the koi fish goes upstream. By making the waves a cool-toned blue color and the koi fish speckled in bright orange and red, it creates a contrast of the two elements. I also created woodblocks to print them on paper. I used the laser cutter to cut three different woodblocks; one is the wave pattern and the shape of the koi fish, and the other two woodblocks are the pattern of the two colors used on the koi fish. I wanted to try and layer the two prints together. Unfortunately, it was difficult to align the three altogether and the outcome was not as expected. Next, I experimented with the woodblocks I made; I took the koi fish pattern and printed it on a piece of paper individually. From there I drew on the pattern, cut them out, and placed them around with them.

Ryukyu Robins

Media: Adobe Illustrator
Size: 11 x 8.5

This piece was inspired by the "shippo" pattern. It is a pattern often symbolizing good relationships and bringing harmony. I have also included clouds, a cherry blossom tree, and a traditional bird in Japan called Ryukyu Robin. The clouds symbolize change, the cherry blossom tree represents optimism but also signifies the start of spring, and the robins symbolize new beginnings and hope. Together they mean even where there is change, there is hope and new beggings. You are also not alone in the world. The reason why there are two robins is to show that there will always be someone by your side.

Traditional Food

Media: Photoshop
Size: 8.5 x 11

This project was about tradition; we would cook our traditional family/ethnic food and create a pattern art piece to go with it. My food was sakura mochi; a dish you would eat as dessert at a picnic while celebrating spring under cherry blossom trees. I thought of a traditional Japanese pattern and use that pattern to create a piece for my picture. I designed it through adobe Illustrator, created a template, and painted my pattern on a piece of fabric using the template. Then I went outside to take a picture of my dish; I went to a grassy area to make it feel like a picnic. The bright colors on my patterns will pop out and complement the green grass. After taking the photo, I put it through photoshop, added text, and finished it off.

Client logo

Media: Adobe Illustrator

Size: Thank you card: 5 x 7, Business card: 2 x 3.5

My client wanted a cute sheep mascot and a pastel color palette for their cards. With a pink base and a pastel green accent. We chose the sheep to be her mascot because Ami-Nation is a crocheting business they wanted to start. A sheep was perfect as her mascot because of the connection between sheep and yarn.

She Kills Monster

Media: Adobe Illustrator

Size: Poster: 11 x 8.5, Infographic: 5 x 5

For the poster my client wanted dragons from the play. In my first design I created a burning sword to seem that it was flamed by the dragon and have the dragon's heads in the background. I used a striped black and white background to make a sort of illusion look. The bright red title and date stood out perfectly for people to see. My second poster design, which was the one ended being chosen, I only changed the background to give it a cleaner look. I chose blue because it goes well with the red so the title can stand out. As for my infographic, I wanted to go for a more red and black and have a shadow of the dragons head. I used a geometric background so you can see the dragon pop out and typed the information about the play.

Kocho Shinobu

Media: Adobe Illustrator

Size: 11 x 8.5

I used flat shapes to create her hair, clothes, etc. I wanted her to be surrounded by Butterflies as if there are a kaleidoscope of them around her. I used the blur tool to make it seem that the full moon was shining in the background.

Original Font

Media: Adobe Illustrator

Size: 8.5 x 11

For this project the goal was to create an original font based off of your object; my object was a cup. I used the cup shape as my curvature part of my letters and used simple thin lines for my spine, counter, ascender, and descender.

I was inspired by women figures because they can look elegant and be powerful beings at the same time, but they are also in most situations stereotyped by others. I experienced stereotypical comments before in my life. So, using a simple design of a black woman posing as if in a Vogue magazine and having encouraging words placed everywhere; some bigger than the other and colored red to show more powerful words that describe the woman. I wanted this piece to be strong-looking but also heartwarming. I chose red to be the main color because it can represent passion and love which is what all women have, it also gives it a strong look that I wanted because all women are tough.
